What is this?

In a land where nobles usually flex their swords, Ars Louvent flexes his Appraisal Skill! Join this not-so-brawny noble scion as he turns his small domain into a force to be reckoned with, all while navigating through a world of magical prowess. Spoiler alert: Ars' Appraisal Skill is mightier than any sword, and his journey is as twisty as a wyvern in a maze.
As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill Season 3 is based on the light novel series by author Miraijin A and illustrator jimmy. The anime series is streaming on Crunchyroll on Sundays.
How was the first episode?

Episode 1 Rating:
With big victories come big changes. Thanks to a string of wartime promotions, Ars has found himself not only the lord of his own tiny fief but the entire region that surrounds it. Far from the front lines, he spends this lull in the civil war establishing himself and his people in their new territory. Part of this involves recruiting new talent and getting up to speed on managing a much larger territory. However, the real issue Ars is facing is that the previous lord was fantastic at his job—and even he could do little to stem the growing disparity between rich and poor.
Thanks to the war, farmers, lacking the personnel to run their farms, have been forced to sell them. This has led not only to a decrease in food production, but also to overpopulation in cities, as more and more people come looking for work.
Yet, rather than a simple economic problem, Ars frames this as a morale issue. He's decided on giving state-owned farms to the poor while receiving little in taxes. Moreover, during wartime, those on these farms will be expected to become soldiers but will have no harvest required—meaning they have land to both fight for and go home to. Simply put, Ars plans to make people invested in their region's well-being, even if the region's coffers take a hit in the present.
All this is to remind us of the key tenet of As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World: You don't need a genius talent to rule well. A good man with talented, loyal friends is more than enough. While Ars continues to struggle with self-confidence, he repeatedly shows that he truly cares, and he can bring out the best in people. He knows when to delegate but doesn't use his power to be lazy.
Ars is not the most pragmatic ruler; he rules with his heart. A ruler dedicated solely to victory would keep Mireille, the greatest strategist of her generation, close at all times. But Ars put her in command of his old fief. Rather than protecting himself, he'd rather protect the home he loves—which brings us to the plot hook for the season.
Up until now, Ars and his friends have been fighting far from home in other people's lands. But now, thanks to a series of backroom dealings, the neighboring Dukedom of Seitz is taking advantage of the Missian civil war and invading—right into Ars' territory. With the civil war still raging in the east, it's now up to Ars to protect his people with little to no support. And let me tell you something: that builds a lot of tension for what's to come.

These first two episodes of the season taken together have a dual focus. The first is on the big picture—the sudden second front of the war and how Ars and the rest are dealing with it. In a purely logical world, Ars would have to stand alone—outnumbered 10-to-1. Couran needs all the troops he can muster to continue to contend for the Ducal throne, after all. However, Couran sends more than a token amount of reinforcements. This is likely because 1) he knows that most nobles would simply surrender the territory to save themselves if they felt abandoned and 2) Ars has built up a tremendous amount of goodwill. This second reason explains why other territories and mercenary groups also flock to his banner.
But while Ars and his top lieutenants plan and carry out the first battle in the new war, the second part of the story focuses on the second generation of Ars' discovered talents—namely Zatt and Muscia. Zatt is a man with great skill in combat—but better still is his skill as a leader. He knows how to motivate his men and keep them organized. However, he's not exactly pleased with how he is being used—as a person picking up the slack for Braham. It's only once Zatt sees just how much raw talent Braham has—what he will be able to become if taught properly—that Zatt accepts his role. Though, that's not to say that he doesn't spend most of his days perpetually annoyed.
Meanwhile, Musica is constantly dealing with impostor syndrome. She was just a klutzy country girl and is now being touted as the next great mage. Moreover, unlike the first batch of people picked up by Ars, she has no real relationship with him. She has no reason to believe in his words about her supposed potential. Without that, she's at war with herself—who she wants to be and who she's been conditioned all her life to think she is.
This is where Charlotte enters into the equation. Charlotte is a seasoned battle mage—famous across Missian for her unfathomable power. She takes no shit from anyone and has absolute faith in both Ars and herself. This is the person who has taken Musica under her wing—and the person who Musica is able to believe in as much as Charlotte believes in Ars. It is through this connection that Musica can move beyond her self-doubts and begin living up to her potential.
But more than that, Musica shows that Ars is affecting those beyond himself. His kindness and talent for nurturing are being passed down from generation to generation. It's an exponential chain reaction that is making people better than they believed they ever could be. And that, more than anything else, is why Ars deserves to become king of this fractured land.
