Once dismissed as the sole ordinary student at the elite Arnold Academy of Sorcery, Ray White—secretly, the Iceblade Sorcerer—has finally earned his place. With a new school year comes a new challenge: The Magicks War, a grand competition pitting teams from rival schools against each other. But an ominous shadow looms over Ray and his friends as the other grand sorcerers plot their next moves.

Rating:

Of all the anime that could potentially get a second season, I never would have put The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World on that list. To quote my own review of the first season, it “is one of the most painfully derivative fantasy anime out there.” And this remains true in this episode.

We once again follow our overpowered protagonist as he attends magic school and now prepares for the good ol' standard team tournament arc. As for the characters (outside of Ray, the titular Iceblade Sorcerer), each of them falls into a different cookie-cutter archtype. We have the tsundere, the dandere, the oneesan, and the ojousama—and it even adds the “little sister” to the cast in the closing minutes of the episode.

As an episode, this season premiere does two things. The first is reintroduce us to the cast and clue the viewer in as to what happened last season. Each of the cast gets a few lines to remind us of their personality—but it is the exposition on past events that surprised me with its subtlety. Instead of telling us what happened through unnatural dialogue, we get quick still-frame flashbacks to key moments to jog our collective memories when they are alluded to.

The second thing this premiere does is attempt to move the plot forward by having the girls bicker over his ever-increasing harem even as they prepare to for the aforementioned tournament. While it feels like fluff, it does at least show Amelia developing as a character beyond her archtype. She is learning to accept her feeling—and is thus filled with panic at the idea of other girls winning Ray's heart.

But as with the first season, the best thing about this show is still Ray himself. Rather than just being dense for no reason, his life as a child soldier in a unit comprised mainly of older women has left him with stunted social skills and a skewed view on normal interactions. He's kind, straight forward, and constantly complements others. In other words, his fellow soldiers inadvertently trained him to be a lady-killer—and I like that both Amelia and Rebecca are shown to have figured this out.

All in all, this episode makes for an average premiere to an average show. If you enjoyed the first season, I see no reason you won't enjoy this one as well.
