What is this?

The war with Tenjiku is over. Moved by Takemichi's words, Mikey disbands the Tokyo Manji Gang. Time-traveler Takemichi is finally free of his nemesis Kisaki, so why does he still feel so on edge? Without Kisaki to seize control of the Tokyo Manji Gang and murder Hina in the future, what's left to worry about?
Tokyo Revengers: War of the Three Titans Arc is based on the Tokyo Revengers manga series by Ken Wakui. The anime series is streaming on Disney+ on Fridays.
How was the first episode?

Episode 1 Rating:
Where does a story go after its main villain dies? That's a question Tokyo Revengers must answer, and soon. Kisaki was a truly hateful antagonist, and stopping his future reign of terror was protagonist Takemichi's main driving motivation. Without Kisaki's jealousy-driven murder of Takemichi's girlfriend Hina in 2017, Takemichi would never have somehow traveled back a dozen years into his middle school-aged self's body and tried so desperately to prevent it. After 50 episodes of twisty-turny alternate timeline teenage gang shenanigans, it finally seems like history is on course.
There have been casualties, though, not least of which is Emma, Tokyo Manji Gang captain Mikey's sister, who died halfway through last season. Takemichi never knew her in the future, and that's why. She was destined to die, regardless of timeline. We spend much of the first half of the episode at her funeral, with most of the large cast turning up to look mournful. I have to admit, in the three-year gap since the show last streamed, I've forgotten who many of these side characters are.
This episode is mostly a coda to the previous story arc, a bit of emotional table clearing for what will presumably be the story's climax. I've never read the manga, so I have absolutely no idea where Tokyo Revengers is heading next, without Kisaki's shadow looming over everything. Why is Takemichi so nervous? I'm not sure, and I'm also not sure if we as viewers are meant to know.
At one point, Mikey threatened to be the new “big bad”, but Takemichi's actions prevented that timeline. Now the inscrutable leader is surprisingly chilled, and he even makes the completely understandable decision to dissolve his biker gang. My main worry is that this will create a power vacuum any number of violent miscreants could fill. There's also the fact that most of the young men in the Tokyo Manji gang are there for its found-family aspect. They're low socioeconomic class lads, poorly educated, with minimal prospects outside of organized crime. What will they do without their social support network?
At least Takemichi isn't alone. His friends, including Hina, Chifuyu, Mikey, and Draken, all know the truth about his time-traveling ability. Mikey's suggestion of leaving a time capsule for him to open when he returns to twelve years in the future is a nice one. I have to wonder what disturbing surprises the perpetually crying Takemichi might face when he returns to his adult life, though. Surely it can't all be peachy, otherwise there'd be no need for another season. I'm anxious to find out what happens next, even if this wasn't the most instantly compelling opening episode. I hope the show doesn't botch its storytelling, as I have to admit, Kisaki's ultimate fate was somewhat less than satisfying. Some of my anxiety comes from my doubts that the show will stick the landing.

With Takemichi's latest leap back to the future, I'm left even more confused with where Tokyo Revengers is headed from this point onward. For all intents and purposes, this episode could have functioned as an incredibly upbeat coda to the series. Takemichi says goodbye to his friends in the past, proposes to Hina, and promises to meet them again in twelve years. That's exactly what happens, and our perpetually lacrimating hero finds himself at a friend's wedding. Takemichi's own nuptials are looming, with the date only three months in the future. Both Hina and her brother are alive. All of the ex-Toman guys are doing well, holding down legitimate jobs. No one is dead, or suffering.
But where's Mikey? Part of me wants to say “who cares?” because to me, Mikey's always been something of a non-character. Inscrutable to the point of uninteresting, I've never figured out why he seems to inspire such unthinking devotion from his friends. Takemichi's here, in his seemingly perfect future, and I wonder if there's an argument for him to leave things well alone? All of his friends, who know about his time-travelling, are keen for him to do this, with even Draken lying to him about Mikey's true fate. He opened a restaurant overseas? Yeah, right.
Seeing everyone so happy and joyful brought a tear to my eye. We've been following the misadventures of this huge cast for multiple years now, and some of them have really grown on me. It's emotional to see them do well… except there's the nagging feeling that Takemichi is going to go make some terrible decision and tear everything to pieces.
It's almost certain that he's going to return to the past again, and change this positive future. The presence of the sinister Bonten gang on news reports doesn't bode too well for Takemichi's idyllic life (even if he's back working in a video rental store, and his apartment remains full of stinking refuse sacks). I'm unsure about the potential of Izana's return, considering his seemingly obvious death at the end of the last season, but maybe he'll turn out to be the endgame villain after the loss of Kisaki?
I've mixed feelings about Tokyo Revengers continuing on from this point. It could have ended here, and I'd have been very happy. Hopefully this last(?) arc exists for good narrative purpose, not merely because the manga creator's editor insisted the story be artificially extended past its natural conclusion. I guess only time will tell.
