| MARRIAGETOXIN (TV) | I am halfway through this and struggling to maintain an interest week to week. The premise seemed fun. Gero is a poison master but needs to find a wife, which is kind of hard when you don’t know how to socialize and your job is killing people. So basically this show is broken up into mini arcs where he helps a girl, makes a friend, whatever, and then on to the next one. It is a bit over the top in the way of shounen jump shows aimed at twelve year olds. The humor isn’t hitting for me. The beast island arc especially was mind numbingly dumb. Most of the villains are of the over the top annoyingly cartoon-y variety, but the bat guy was the absolute worst of the bunch. | |
| Sword of the Demon Hunter (TV) | Decent | This is a serious in tone historical fantasy genre show taking place in the Edo period in which a stoic ronin with a tragic backstory goes around solving demon related issues and killing demons. The origin story is all laid out in episode one, which is a movie length deal. Teased at the end is a quick glimpse 170 years in the future, as it seems Jinya's oni powers have made him immortal. Part one (13 episodes) ended up being largely episodic, the villain from the first episode doesn't make an appearance (albeit brief) until the very end. I was really interested in seeing where this is going, but my hidive subscription is about to run out, and I am not about to pay for a whole streaming service for one show. (Part one Completed watching August 2025) A handful of episodes into part two sees another decade go by. It's the 1860's, the political situation is rapidly changing, and Jinya is still hunting demons and eating at the soba shop. Unfortunately this is where my subscription runs out. |
