Makoto Takatsuki is a normal high school student and a hardcore RPG player. However, “normal” goes out the window when his whole class is involved in a bus crash and whisked away to another world! Powerful gods rule this strange new land of magic and monsters, and every newcomer is blessed with strong stats and unique skills. Well, not quite. Makoto's stats turn out to be pathetic, and his skills are super weak compared to his classmates'...he's even stuck as an apprentice mage. Worse still, he's given only ten years to live!

Luckily, Makoto soon meets a minor goddess named Noah, who appears in Makoto's dreams and asks him to become her first believer. With the help of Noah's blessings and a divine weapon, Makoto seeks to become strong enough to rescue his goddess from the dungeon where she's been trapped. By training hard and using his weak skills in unorthodox ways, Makoto proves that, even when playing on hardcore difficulty, an RPG player always makes it to the end!

Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers is based on the light novel series by author Isle Osaki and illustrator Tam-U. The anime series is streaming on Crunchyroll on Sundays.

Remember those seasons where I would try to find one interesting or unusual thing about every generic isekai that came out? Good times, good times. If I were to go back to it, I'd point out that Full Clearing Another World with a Goddess with Zero Believers starts off… almost fine. When our Kirito clone Makoto wakes up in another world after freezing to death on a bus with his classmates, he's not greeted with immediate hostility but his nerdy friend celebrating their rebirth. It's not much, but the protagonist not being treated like dog shit on the bottom of his classmates' shoes makes it feel less angry and misanthropic. Bland? Sure. Formulaic? Absolutely. But at least it only kind of hates women, and doesn't hate men at all.

But the novelty wears off quickly, Makoto's bestie takes off to become a merchant, and we are left alone with this damp tissue of a protagonist. You see, one of his skills is “calm mind,” which in theory means he is able to keep his wits about him in stressful situations. In practice, it means he goes the entire episode with the exact same bored expression on his face that I had. I swear, it was like looking in a mirror, and I'm not talking about the terrible CG goblins. I was never on Team Makoto (at least not this one), since he's the kind of guy who plays a video game with his dying breaths as his classmates succumb to the cold around him. But isn't the main appeal of shows with this structure (where in the protagonist is the only member of a group with supposedly crappy skills), the pain he feels from abandonment? Makoto is mildly frustrated at how weak he is, but there is no sense of tension even from that in the midst of battle.

This makes him work really well against the yet-unnamed titular goddess. His lack of emotion bounces super well off of her petulant brattiness—because isekai goddesses are always empty-headed emotional children. Those two are such a dynamic duo. They really light up the screen. They're sure to win over the hearts and minds of viewers all over the world. She doesn't just have one believer: she has billions. (And this entire paragraph was sarcsm, in case you missed it.)

This show feels like it is the embodiment of the word basic. Despite foreshadowing a few events and reveals that have yet to be seen, almost everything about this show's setup feels like it is dragging out some of the most well established plot points of its genre. There were a few elements here that I liked, such as the idea that the main character Makoto isn't the only person that has been teleported to a new world and instead was sent here with a group of classmates. I also like how the world is so used to having people show up from other worlds that they have a whole system in place. In fact, if I squint my eyes really hard, I can even see a little bit of social commentary there with prayer and religion being driving factors for having a better life.

But I am really doing my best to give the show any kind of credit because outside of those scant details, there isn't really a lot to get excited about with this show. Makoto just happens to be reborn with very generic skills and weaker than normal magic so he has to work harder than everybody else just to do the basic necessities. I do feel bad for him, especially since it's not really clear why he was dealt a bad hand, but nowadays, a premiere needs to do a bit more than just put a character in a forced unfortunate situation for me to actually care about the show as a whole. The idea of him becoming the first believer of a shady goddess could be a fun angle to explore, especially if he made that decision out of desperation, but the show doesn't really play it up like that. If anything, the show leans more into the failure goddess archetype that I've just seen better in so many other shows before. This is definitely one of the more generic shows that I have looked at for this season so far and with so many other shows to look forward to, it's hard to muster up any energy for something like this.

My least favorite part of trudging through all of these crappy isekai shows is how much they waste audience's time. Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers is, and say it with me now, “A generic fantasy isekai about a guy (and his classmates) who gets reborn into an RPG world, and the Main Guy has lame powers, except, uh oh, a goddess gets involved, and now he's probably going to be as overpowered as every other Isekai Main Guy.” Yet, despite how tired and beaten down this premise is in the year 2026, it insists on spending precious minutes blathering on about the same old tutorial bullshit we've seen a million times over. The world has monsters. Everyone gets RPG skills. Main Guy Makoto has to go through the rigmarole of finding out his skills suck. We just went over all of this at the top of the paragraph; we all know exactly how this is going to shake out. Yet still, it goes through the motions.

It's just about the worst way any one of these things can get started, since the only explanations for insulting the audience's intelligence in such a manner lie in either maliciousness, laziness, cynicism, or flat-out incompetence. Often, all of these traits have been blended together into an insipid, miserable slurry. It's not a good look. So, once we're through the muck of the first ten minutes or so and the “plot” of this anime technically gets started, does Full Clearing Another World Etc. Etc. have anything of interest or entertainment value to offer? Unlike the creators of this anime, I actually think of my audience as literate human beings with a fully-developed capacity for object permanence, so I'm just going to tell you: No. No, it does not.

Makoto is a Grade-A Dillweed of a protagonist, which basically kills whatever potential this anime could have had right out of the gate. He's the kind of personality black hole that spent the last few minutes of his mortal life playing a video game while his whole class got slowly crushed to death in their bus that was trapped under a rock slide or whatever. I believe this is meant to be a joke, but because Full Clearing Another World is incapable of depicting an emotion other than “vague and dull acknowledgement that things may, in fact, be happening,” it doesn't read as humorous. Makoto's just a freak sociopath who treats every waking moment of both of his lives like he is casually browsing the section of the grocery store where they keep all of the flavorless, low-fat yogurt. The son of a gun doesn't even plan on buying the yogurt, either. He's happy just to window shop.

Eventually, several more minutes of useless bandying, Makoto meets the titular Goddess, and then the show shifts from being interminably dull to terminally annoying. The Goddess' whole shtick is that she is very whiny and desperate, to the point where she just offers to flash Makoto her panties if it means he'll sign up as her believer. It wasn't long before my eyes began to glaze over, and I became more irritated by how obviously the soundtrack was trying to rip-off the famous Final Fantasy “Prelude” melody. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this dreck at all costs.

They say that comparison is the thief of joy but when you have something that takes inspiration from a world-wide hit, you are basically inviting those comparisons. You don't make an MMO death game show and expect people to pretend Sword Art Online doesn't exist. Similarly, in the case of Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers, you don't write a story about a young adventurer becoming the sole believer of a beautiful/needy/insecure goddess and pretend that Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? doesn't exist. It does, and it's way better at telling its story than this one is.

That said, there are some interesting and original aspects to this anime's world that I really enjoyed. The first is that, while Makoto has the ever-dreaded status windows, they aren't something common to this world. Rather, they come from how the world's magic interacts with his interests to create his unique skill—i.e., he loved RPG games in his first life on Earth so he gets magic status windows in the fantasy world. Similarly, his friend Fujiyan love dating sims so he's able to see any and all conversations he witnessed as text and save them for later—basically meaning he has the equivalent of photographic memory for conversations. It makes me interested in what the other character's skills have turned out to be.

Likewise, I much prefer stories where, rather than being overpowered, the protagonist is weak and has to use his mind and the tools on hand to get victory. Makoto using his low-level magic to blind one goblin he's fighting and lure the others into a river where his meager water magic gets a power boost are great examples of this.

However, outside of those two aspects, I found this episode quite boring. It was a rehash of a billion similar isekai anime. And the meeting with the nameless goddess was just as rote. They share no chemistry and have nothing to tie them together in past or personality as Makoto ventures out into this strange new world. (Or would it be “completely bog-standard western fantasy world” in this case?)

Regardless, I have little hope for this series going forward. If this was it putting its best foot forward, perhaps it'd be better to take a step back and let me go on my way.
