It's pretty easy to recommend Narumi's Week at Work for the simple matter of how short it is. There are four total episodes with lengths between 2 and 4 minutes each. Watching and clicking and buffering is probably a total of fifteen minutes out of your day to watch all of these. That alone makes it an easy sell for most people, as it takes less than one (1) episode of anime's worth of viewing time to get the full experience here. If you are a pre-existing Kaiju No. 8 fan, you will likely appreciate it as a nice snack while you wait for the next season to drop. If you are a complete novice to the setting, it's not a huge ask to check these out, as you will need no prior background knowledge to appreciate the comedy. The barrier to entry is low enough that Minilla could clear it with ease. These shorts are successful in what they set out to do: be funny asides with pre-existing Kaiju No. 8 cast members. The comedy has a good blend of character-specific stuff, general life experience observations/situations, and goofball zaniness. I don't think there are any big gut-busting laughs in here, but that doesn't stop it from being a good time that asks little and gives a lot in return. I would imagine that nearly everyone can find some moment, situation, or character reaction charming enough for a smile or a slight chuckle, regardless of how invested they are in Kaiju No. 8 as a series. Narumi having a somewhat tense encounter in the bath was one of the highlight chuckles for me, as it was both funny and a good example of careful framing choices with their reflections isolated in each mirror. I suppose the academic question is whether or not this is intended to convert the uninitiated into fans. If that is the intent, then I can't speak with 100% certainty, as I already enjoy the series. However, I'd guess this probably is not enough to move the needle much on that front. Sure, it's fun and short, but it's not the most brilliant anime comedy work that I've seen. I would be surprised if someone saw this with no context and felt compelled to watch the series because of it. Perhaps it can lodge some good feelings in the brain such that later down the road a viewer might give the main series a chance. But as it stands, I think it is mostly best for existing fans to get a few chuckles while they wait for more giant monster action. One thing of note is that this is Narumi's focus, but that would not be my first choice for a side character to highlight. Perhaps down the line we can get other comedy shorts (or action shorts even) focusing on other members of the team, heightening our appreciation for the rest of the crew. If this is a herald of such things to come, that would bode well, but for now, it is perfectly fine as it is. In short, these shorts are a quick delight that provide a bit of fun without overstaying their welcome or being so ground-breaking that they simply must be seen at all costs. |
