Product Overview
The collection features three models inspired by Evangelion Unit-01, Unit-02, and Unit-00. The design of each EVA is rendered on the dial in Raden — a traditional Japanese craft that works the iridescent nacre of seashells. Each watch is driven by a Japanese automatic movement and built as a genuine Made- in-Japan timepiece. Every dial is finished by hand, and the Raden shifts in expression with the angle of the light.
Featuring a Traditional Japanese Craft: Raden (Mother-of-Pearl) Inlay
Raden is a traditional technique in which the iridescent, pearlescent layer of shells such as abalone is shaved extremely thin and set into a lacquer ground. In Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, it has long been known as aogai-nuri and handed down as one of the signature techniques of Takaoka lacquerware. Because the shell is a natural material, every piece reveals a one-of-a-kind play of color. For this collection, each dial was finished one by one, entirely by hand.
The Artisan: Takeshi Musashigawa, Fourth-Generation Head of Musashigawa Studio
Takaoka lacquerware traces its origins to 1609, when Maeda Toshinaga, lord of the Kaga domain, founded the town of Takaoka and encouraged the making of everyday goods; it has since been designated a traditional craft of Japan. Founded in 1910, Musashigawa Studio has carried this tradition across generations. Its fourth-generation head, Takeshi Musashigawa, is a young master who reinterprets traditional motifs for the present day and brings raden to contemporary products.
For this project, GARRACK worked with Musashigawa to render the EVANGELION designs on the dials, recreating each character's intricate patterns by hand-laying wafer-thin shell, piece by piece — a dialogue between tradition and modern design.
The Raden Dial, Step by Step
1. Polishing — The shell is cut and polished to a thickness of about 0.1 mm.
2. Coloring — Color is applied to the reverse of the polished, iridescent surface.
3. Cutting — The shell is cut into individual parts to match the design.
4. Lacquering — The base dial is treated with lacquer.
5. Inlay — Animal glue (nikawa) is applied to the lacquered dial, and the cut pieces are laid by hand.
6. Finishing — A final coating completes each dial.
