The Traditional Crafts
Kanazawa Gold Leaf
Renowned for its use in Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Kanazawa gold leaf comes from Kanazawa, Japan's leading region for gold leaf production. The metal is beaten into sheets as thin as 0.1 microns — one ten-thousandth of a millimeter — before artisans apply and color each piece by hand, so that every dial carries its own character.
Takaoka Raden (Mother-of-Pearl Inlay)
Raden is a traditional technique in which the iridescent layer of seashell is shaved wafer-thin and set into a lacquer ground. In Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, it has been handed down as aogai-nuri, a hallmark of Takaoka lacquerware. For these watches the dials are crafted by the Musashigawa Studio, a workshop continuing the tradition since 1910. Because the shell is a natural material, the play of light makes every dial subtly unique.
