What is this?

Arnold, the seventh Imperial Prince of the Adrasia Empire, is called "THE INSIPID PRINCE" among people since his twin brother is a genius and is respected by all people. However, he has a secret identity -SILVER, one of the only five SS-rank adventurers on the continent. When his younger brother Leo decides to aim for the throne, Arnold starts running things behind the scenes to support his brother. Unexpectedly, the most beautiful lady becomes his assistant.
The Insipid Prince's Furtive Grab for The Throne is based on the light novel series by author Tanba and illustrator Yuunagi. The anime series is streaming on Crunchyroll on Mondays.

Merriam-Webster defines “insipid” as “lacking in qualities that interest, stimulate, or challenge : dull, flat.” I define it as a word that I know how to spell but for some reason can never type correctly the first try. I intend to leave all my failed attempts in this review. Editors, please do not fix them.
I'm not sure what the translators here think inspid means, but I'm pretty sure that it's not the correct definition. Arnold's prince persona may be haughty, arrogant, and kind of stupid, but I would not describe him as dull or flat. His twin brother, who he's trying to get onto the throne seems pretty insiod, even if he's a reasonably competent ruler. The script is certainly inspipd. The plot isn't all that hard to follow, considering its attempts at creating tense political intrigue are shallow and rely on everyone other than Arnold being deeply stupid. However, no matter how hard I tried, every line every character said slid off my brain like Teflon. I had to go back multiple times to retain what was happening, even if I was keeping my eyes focused on the screen at all times. How could I not be drawn in by a story that is so assured of a character's brilliance, even when he says things like, “And now, it's time for the insipid prince's furtive activities.”
To quote the viral tweet, my favorite part of Morbius was when he said, “It's morbin' time,” and morbed all over the place.
You know what else was inspid? The storyboarding! I'm sure the people at MAHO FILM are fine folks, but they are my eternal enemies both for their choice in what anime to adapt and the quality of the adaptations I am forced to sit through every quarter. The dialogue is delivered almost entirely in extreme closeup, and let me tell you, this is a talky show. Someone is running their mouth approximately 90% of the time, and the camera is practically crawling into their mouth, it's zoomed in so tightly. Silver looks like Temu Zero from Code Geass, but the eyes on his mask are so close together that he looks comical instead of cool and intimidating.
The Insidip Prince may not be insipid, but it is boring, mean, and ugly.

The title of The Insipid Prince's Furtive Grab for The Throne screams of a localization team desperate to make their product stand out by whatever means necessary, though they may have overplayed their hands a bit. Even a jaded English teacher such as myself has to raise an eyebrow at sticking words like “furtive” in your title when you could easily use something a bit more elegant that most English speakers would immediately understand, like “clandestine” or “sly.” On the other hand, this is not a very good anime, so the goofy title means that I can indulge in my inner-twelve-year-old's whims of chaos and begin my next paragraph like so:
“More like The In-stupid Prince's Fart-ive Grab for the Throne, am I right folks?” Thank you very much, and now I'll just go ahead and add this writeup to my freelance invoice, with an added charge for the superlative wit I have demonstrated so far. I'd be more gracious to The Insipid Prince, since its premise has a bit more going for it than the usual pablum, but the execution here is just, well…insipid. The premiere stumbles right out of the gate when it introduces Arnold in his double-role as the titular prince of lacking quality and the mysterious, masked “Silver” who goes around actually getting shit done. For one, Silver wears such a terribly designed outfit that he looks less like an intimidating Dark Knight and more like an unfortunate cosplayer who failed to properly measure the inlets for the eyes he was carving on his Super Duper Badass Man costume until it was too late and just had to commit to looking like a crosseyed horseshoe crab. On the opposite front, the show fails at making Arnold's put-on persona any interesting or entertaining either. At least Bruce Wayne occasionally puts some effort into playing up the idiot playboy shtick when other people are watching, which can make for some great contrasts with all of the sleuthing and punching he gets up to later on. Arnold just acts like every other vaguely intelligent and supremely arrogant edgelord we see in shows like this. The only difference between his two identities is whether he is wearing a very stupid costume.
The Batman comparisons are not an accident on my part, either, since this anime wants to be Lame Fantasy Light Novel Batman so bad. Arnold even has a loyal butler who knows his identity and helps him manage his affairs. Now, I'm used to lame protagonists and silly outfits in my cringey anime meant for grumpy pre-teens, so if The Inspid Prince had at managed to inject some style or creativity into these proceedings, I could forgive a show for being a fairly bland riff on superhero cliches. Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing of the sort to be found here. This is another one of those cheap productions where everything is drawn in a flat, drab style with most scenes consisting of endless parades of medium shots directly centered on the talking heads of maybe three or four different people.
I'm pretty sure the only audience for this show consists of diehard fans of the source material that are just hellbent on seeing the scenes from the book animated and voice-acted, no matter how poor the quality of the end result is. In that case, I guess I say have at it, but everyone else would do well to just ignore The Insipid Prince entirely.

Rating:
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good political drama. The idea of a large family with multiple heirs being at each other's throats fighting for the throne through duplicitous means can be very interesting. I'm also a sucker for the trope of having one person in the limelight publicly representing while another person does all the dirty work behind the scenes. The problem with this premiere right out the gate, though, is that it just sort of starts by assuming that I will immediately care about everything that these characters are going through. There's no real buildup or intrigue to what is at stake regarding all of this political infighting and that's a problem because what should be the driving force of the narrative feels like an afterthought in the show. There's more dedication towards Arnold , hiding his identity, and the ultimate reveal at the end of the first episode, then there is about why he's going through all this trouble in the first place. For God's sake, I don't even really know what the relationship is between Arnold and his brother.
I'm sure this stuff will be revealed later on, but given the ending and given the narrative trajectory of this first episode, it feels like the show is actually going to be more concerned with the romance between Arnold and this princess then it is with these fantasy politics. Everything is just sort of hand waved away and character interactions progress for the sake of convenience rather than through any genuine conversational intrigue. I don't really care about Arnold and the princess' relationship, I don't care about Arnold's secret being revealed, and I have no reason to really get behind his cause. The only thing I really care about is Arnold's relationship with his butler because at least the dialogue is witty and the chemistry is genuine there. I know that a premiere episode isn't supposed to definitively answer anything as more often than not it's all about establishing or setting up the initial premise. But that premise still needs to feel interesting or at the very least there needs to be weight to the story that is being told. Maybe that's the best way to describe this show so far, it feels very weightless and uninteresting.
