Back when I was in college, I dabbled a bit in kendo. I remember we watched this video in class where kendo practitioners of different ranks each had a glowing ball attached to the tip of their sword. Then, with the lights off, they did simple, vertical practice swings. This showed clearly how controlled the swing was by how little the glowing tip wobbled from side-to-side in the dark. And let me tell you, when it came to these high-ranked, elderly men—these true masters of kendo—it just looked like a ball of light going up and down on a mechanical track. It was just that perfect.

All this is to give an example of the fact that sword fighting is an art more about technique than even strength and stamina—though both of the latter are important. (After all, in true sword combat, all it takes is one good cut for the fight to be over.)

Beryl, however, seems to have forgotten the relationship between age, strength, and technique over the years. Because he didn't become some grand, famous swordsman while in his prime, he thinks he is unable to get stronger in the present. But the fact remains: he might not have the raw power of youth, but technique can always be improved. He just lacks the drive and the proper method to climb to greater heights.

Lucy (who is untold years older than even Beryl), has noticed the rut the sword master has found himself in. It's implied that Lucy also found herself in a similar rut magically at some point and has long since found the way out: teaching. This is why Lucy runs the magic school. You can only properly teach something if you understand it. Thus, the better you get at teaching, the better you understand yourself and what you need to work on.

While Beryl has been a teacher most of his life, he has, by simple geography, ended up teaching a specific type of student—poor young people with no real goal in life or those who sought him out specifically. With this episode, he is put in the role of teaching students unlike any he has taught before. They are, first and foremost, mages—magic is their main passion. Second, they are attending a prestigious magic academy in the royal capital—their lives have no doubt been far different from the students that Beryl has taught before.

Teaching students of a different background and mindset expands the teacher's horizons—what works for one student won't work for all. This is no doubt why Lucy took Ficelle, a sword master, on as her apprentice. By teaching Ficelle, Lucy helped unlock a whole new study of magic. And even if she doesn't practice it herself, she no doubt learn many things she could utilize in her own magic in the process.

Now Lucy is doing the same for Beryl. The only question that remains is, now that Beryl has found the method for improvement, can he find the drive to properly apply it—and not just to his new students but to himself as well.
