Originally published in 2009, Exposed Love -Sarashi Ai- is a collection of stories, some interconnected and some singular, that all feature exhibitionism to some extent by mangaka Shindo L, who would go on to find internet fame just a few years later with Metamorphosis. Featuring wild sexual scenarios and characters bonding over their shared love of specific kinks, Exposed Love -Sarashi Ai- lays the groundwork for the themes that would define much of the author's career.

The secret sauce of Shindo L's manga, from this collection of his early work in Exposed Love -Sarashi Ai- to his internet-famous Metamorphosis and the equally intense but with gender-feels TSF Monogatari, is how his stories blend genuine heart with some of the most hardcore kinks imaginable. Exposed Love features numerous stories about young people coming together and forming meaningful relationships over their shared interest and attraction to each other, except that, instead of more vanilla hobbies, these characters are into advanced kinks like exhibitionism. In this way, his works that aren't direct parodies of other media often feel like celebrations of people connecting through taboos that usually inspire social isolation, and I can't help but have a soft spot for them.

The overarching narrative of Exposed Love, expressed through chapters also titled“Exposed Love,” focuses on Kurosaki, a young woman with an exhibitionism kink, who works up the courage to confess to her crush Noda, who just so happens to have a voyeurism kink that leads to increasingly debaucherous scenarios. Outside of the intensity, passion, and thrill instilled in every sexual encounter between these characters, there's a genuine heart to their bonding over interests that they've likely been pressured to repress for most of their lives. Not to mention that the central kink to these stories, exhibitionism, is uniquely suited to exploration in the medium of manga. While public intimacy is a fairly common sexual proclivity, it's not depicted much in media featuring real people, as there are several legal and ethical issues tied to having sex in spaces where non-consenting individuals may be present. In these drawings, though, these fantasies can be explored to their fullest, and Shindo L manages to find increasingly hot and ridiculous scenarios for these characters to perv in.

The other stories in Exposed Love, “The Student Council President is Loved” and “Barrier Free,” also have their charms even as the kinks in question here skew more vanilla. In “The Student Council President,” a young man and a young woman both confess their love for the female student council president at the same time, with the group then deciding to become a throuple rather than leave someone out of the relationship. Even though group sex is a pretty common theme in hentai, it's 2026, and we're still not getting a lot of RomComs that prominently feature polyamory! This story was written in 2009 at the latest and manages to depict both the tenderness and passion of that kind of relationship super well. Of course, I'm going to sing its praises.

As for “Barrier Free,” this is a pretty straightforward romance-heavy hentai between a young man and a young woman, where the leading lady, Inoue Tsukino, just so happens to be in a wheelchair. I cannot remember the last time I read an erotic manga that prominently featured a character with a physical disability, and that is such a bummer. Even under the most cynical lens that argues that Inoue Tsukino is only in a wheelchair in this work for her to be sexualized, disabled bodies deserve to be sexually celebrated, and disabled people deserve to feel sexually desirable too!

I'll be the first to admit that Shindo L's manga are not going to appeal to everyone, and Exposed Love -Sarashi Ai- is no exception. However, this work is filled with the kind of informed character writing and casual inclusion that I love in fiction, erotic or otherwise, and is absolutely worth checking out for anyone even a little curious.

Shindo L is better known for the extremely dark Metamorphosis, and to be clear, some of Metamorphosis' debauchery can be found in Exposed Love. The ongoing exhibition story does involve enema play, after all, which is going to be a big fat content warning for anyone going into this. But also, Exposed Love is far more interested in romantic love stories... albeit with a ton of kink thrown in.

Shindo deserves credit for going into some places some artists don't dare. There's something to be said about a story like Barrier Free, where the female lead is in a wheelchair following leg surgery. Is it exploitative to have a story about a girl in a wheelchair? Maybe, but in the 14 years since Barrier Free was first published, I can't think of a second story of an eromanga featuring a woman in a wheelchair. Shindo's dalliances with edgier fetishes don't remove that a lot of these love stories are honestly really cute. Sure, Aoi is an exhibitionist, but her partner isn't going to let her get attacked by some rando. Sure, Rina is willing to sabotage Shuu's relationship with the school president, but they manage to settle into a healthy-looking throuple. Just because you're making a lovey-dovey story doesn't mean everything has to be missionary with the lights turned off.

Shindo's art might be a bit divisive; characters make ugly faces and anatomy is fleshy and raw. But I think it works. There's a lot of vulnerability needed for physical intimacy, and sometimes body parts just look like body parts. I appreciate the combined cartooniness mixed with hyper-realism.

Shindo L's works aren't for everyone, and even when he does more romantic stories, I still have to give them some strong restrictions. But even here, with what seems to be a lot of his earlier work, Shindo demonstrates a very deft pen capable of interweaving genuinely captivating stories with memorable art and a lot of daring. And on that merit alone, you have to give the guy some props. This gets a strong recommendation from me, especially for folks who were a bit overwhelmed by Metamorphosis. But be mindful of the tags...

Exhibitionism is an interesting kink. The idea of being turned on just by being watched can have various different levels of execution. Some people like to be watched just having sex while other people like the thrill of almost getting caught in deplorable acts. It's a very fine line to ride when it comes to the latter, because you don't want to expose yourself to people that do not want to be exposed to something overly sexual since it's not fair to them. However, if a scene is too controlled, then you might miss out on that type of taboo thrill. While I do think this book technically violates some of the courtesies that are often associated with genuine exhibition play, considering that there are scenes where the main characters will have sex in front of a bunch of people in a public place and there were seeming we no repercussions for it, I would be lying if I said that I was titillated by the extremities which exhibitionism was portrayed in this book.

The story follows a young high school girl who has an incredibly heightened kink that she does not fully know how to control. All she knows is that she wants to expose herself specifically in front of a boy that she likes, who also has a voyeurism kink. Along the way, their friends get introduced and it ends up becoming an assortment of exhibitionism scenes. There is a very strong suspension of disbelief, especially since the book isn't always clear with regards to how much other people around them are noticing a very blatant scene. The art also doesn't communicate that idea well, considering just how detailed yet exaggerated it can be. These women exhibit such strong facial features of being turned on that I cannot imagine any person in a normal setting looking at them and not assuming that something is up. However, that is the pill that needs to be swallowed when it comes to going bigger with these types of scenes.

If you enjoy exhibitionism or can overlook some of that, then I think you'd be in for a very good time here. The sex is very involved and I really do like ShindoL's' art style. They always do such a great job of really making it look like the women are getting completely lost in the sex scenes that they are either imagining or actively participating in. I think that's an important thing to communicate, especially when less vanilla kinks start getting involved. Definitely give this one a shot, because I do think it fully runs the gambit of the kink that it is trying to portray.
