Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Calamity

The Quincy King and his Royal Guard shatter Squad Zero's powerful Bankai and finally steps into the Reio Greater Palace. Ichibe Hyosube entrusts Ichigo Kurosaki and his allies to protect the Soul King, but due to Yhwach's trickery, Ichigo cuts down the Soul King with his sword. The death of the Soul King mirrors the collapse of the Three Worlds, as distortions and omens of destruction start to appear in all realms.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Calamity is based on the Bleach manga series by Tite Kubo. The anime series is streaming on Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney+ on Saturdays.

Okay, Bleach is back for its last hurrah and I…don't know the names of half of these people. Moreover, I don't care for what this episode is doing to the characters I do know and like. I am not the first person to point out that Bleach has way too many named characters for its own good, but that friction point is especially noticeable in the premier of its final season. It's July of 2026, and the previous season of this anime came out nearly two full years ago in October of 2026. A lot of really good anime has come out since 2024 (and even more titles that command attention have surfaced since Bleach's heyday in the late aughts and early 2010s), so I struggle to keep all of these characters and their growingly obtuse powers straight.

I'm getting ahead of myself, though. This episode features Ichigo and company heading up to fight the big bad Yhwach, while Ishida stays behind to hold off *checks the wiki* Jugram Haschwalth who's currently in possession of Yhwach's omnipotence while the Quincy King is sleeping. Chad and *checks the wiki again* Ganju Shiba stay behind to fight some jobber living statues — because god forbid Chad, one of the original characters in the series have an important fight with a named character — and we learn as Ishida and Haschwalth fight that Yhwach plans to merge the various planes of existence in the Bleach universe and rule over all of them.

The back half of the episode then transitions to Yoruichi's fight with *checks the wiki for a third time* Askin Nakk Le Vaar, with the former nearly incapacitated due to the latter's toxins and her brother now barely alive. Urahara arrives and, through a pat on the ass, is able to temporarily alleviate Yoruichi's symptoms. The fight resumes and, much to Yoruichi's chagrin, Urahara forces her to transform into her most powerful form where she gains tremendous, ever shifting Spiritual Pressure to counter Le Vaar's immunity to Spiritual Pressure with enough exposure…with the downside being that Yoruichi loses her sentience and behaves like a house cat.

Remember when Yoruichi was a cool mentor figure to Ichigo and his posse? It feels wildly misogynistic for her to 1) have the title of this episode printed across her ass, and 2) for her to be reduced to a mewing cat girl who's literally licking Urahara after expressly saying that she did not want to lose her autonomy. I know that Bleach has long featured generously proportioned women in revealing outfits, but this fanservice feels especially mean-spirited and is an advancement that I do not care for. I feel especially strongly about this as Yoruichi transforming into a dangerous sex object didn't even work, and now Urahara and Le Vaar are set to face off as the episode closes.

On a more technical level, I also take umbrage with the logical consistency of this episode's writing. I can forgive Yoruichi apparently having a perfect counter to Le Vaar's abilities despite never having brought it up before (because Bleach fights have long been a series of ass-pulls justified through metaphors and pseudo-science). What really irks me in this episode, though, is that Yoruichi and Urahara are able to move to a different location with Le Vaar very easily, while Yoruichi's brother is laying dying on the ground next to Le Vaar! If any of these characters acted like normal people, a hostage situation would begin to unfold which could be super interesting given Yoruichi and Urahara's skillsets, but instead we just get a series of misogynistic hype moments.

That being said, these hype moments are pretty well animated and I've been building up calluses to Bleach's BS since I was fourteen. I knew that these closing episodes were going to be rough narratively, and still had fun seeing a few of the standout scenes I remembered from the manga animated with the shonen lavishness that earlier parts of Bleach helped define. Nobody should start watching Bleach from this episode, but if you've stuck around for this long you'll probably stick out these last ten episodes regardless of their narrative quality.
