Ugh, I see what Hokke's Mouthy Gyaru Meets Monster Cock is going for, and it's not at all succeeding. A “my childhood friend is hot now” story, this work does little to distinguish itself from other entries in this plentiful genre besides being much worse than the average work of this kind. If I had to find a single nice thing to say about this work to balance out what's otherwise about to be a scathing review, it's that I'm glad even works of this quality are getting licensed globally now, as this caliber of artist still deserves to get paid for their work.

The second Tatsu and Noa reconnect in this story's early pages, Tatsu is immediately characterized as the kind of put-upon incel that is impossible to root for. He immediately assumes the worst of his old friend based on her body and appearance, and behaves in such a way that makes it hard to believe any person, let alone his childhood friend, would want to have sex with him. With these characters only trading insults and making assumptions about each other before having sex, they have so little chemistry that I found it impossible to care about the events playing out before me.

The tone of Mouthy Gyaru Meets Monster Cock is also really discordant, where it feels like the main characters are hate fucking for most of this work, only for the story to try to force an emotional connection between the two in the eleventh hour. Compounding my frustrations with this work is its very clunky art style. Expressions are stiff, anatomies are inconsistent, and the linework feels closer to a sketch than a finished work. Moreover, the visual direction and character designs feel so generic that I can't even pick up on a glimmer of personality in this work, making it feel like a bad take on played-out tropes.

What really pushed this work from bad to painful is the translation, though. All of the major characters in Mouthy Gyaru Meets Monster Cock use a liberal amount of internet terminology that reads as completely unnatural. Between this dialogue direction and the predetermined way the events in this story unfold, this manga feels like it was written by an alien or, worse, by committee via Reddit or 4chan. I cannot recommend that anyone read or spend money on this work, and hope you instead check out just about any other manga featured in this preview guide.

Aww, they really like each other.

Mouthy Gyaru thrives on one simple concept: both of our leads, Tatsuya and Noa, are trying to get a rise out of each other, and very clearly having a blast doing so. Noa absolutely has Tatsuya eating out of the palm of her hand by getting him to try to bang her into submission, and she's very clearly having a blast giving him lip once she's a shivering wreck. It's a cute set-up, enough so that I'm willing to forgive Tatsuya not having a face.

It helps that the two are very clearly having fun with their would-be hate-sex (is it still hate-sex if the anger is one-sided?). These two idiots were meant for each other, and I really hope Mouthy Gyaru gets a second chapter. Also, I appreciate that Hokke even invites comments from fans via Irodori's website. They're coming at this with a good attitude.

The art in Mouthy Gyaru isn't perfect; everyone has a weird lumpy look to them—and as mentioned, Tatsuya doesn't have a face. There's a rimjob scene, which not everyone will enjoy (I know I don't). But the hate-sex never gets too hateful, and our two romantic leads have a fun dynamic with each other. This is a great set-up to further misadventures, and even if it doesn't get a second chapter, I give Mouthy Gyaru a strong recommendation.

This story reminds me why brats are so difficult to deal with, especially in intense sexual scenes. A brat is somebody who constantly antagonizes their partner to get a specific reaction out of them, both in and outside of scenes. I like the fact that this story almost seems to set itself up like it is more of a vanilla story with two childhood friends reuniting, only for it to turn into the faceless male getting so fed up with his bratty childhood friend's behavior that he genuinely thinks he could discipline her through some hard-core fucking. I actually do like the back-and-forth that these two have both leading up to and during the sex scenes, even if it does border a bit on going too far in the brat's favor. That is always the delicate balancing act that needs to be done during these types of setups because if a brat goes too far, then it ends up feeling like there's no real emotional or sexual gratification. However, the scenes do a good job of communicating that ebb and flow with one character trying very hard to break the other with a reasonable amount of resistance.

The artwork is pretty standard, sadly, and it's a little bit distracting how good the brat looks in this book while everything else looks bland. The progression of the sex scenes does feel very satisfying though, especially as things get more intense to meet the brat's expectations. It ultimately culminates in an ending that feels mostly satisfying, but it also feels like there is supposed to be a little bit more there emotionally in order to really stick the landing. I don't know if there is more to the story beyond this book, but I would certainly be happy to see more exploring the actual genuine feelings that these two characters share for each other. After all, they already clearly have great physical chemistry. If you're someone who likes brat play or a lot of verbal back-and-forth, then give this a try because I think it is a solid setup with a decent execution.

When I read 18+ comics I'm often asking the void, why does so much pornography focus on demeaning and “disciplining” young women? I ask, because when one looks at human history, one sees many stories about groups of young men running rampant, committing acts of violence and terror, causing destruction. One hardly hear of groups of young women doing anything similar. And yet, here is another manga in which the “discipline” of a young woman is the main prompt.

Mouthy Gyaru Meets Monster Cock features both protagonists being brutally demeaning to one another. Of course, even then it's not an equitable relationship. Noa, due to her popular gyaru personality, is beastly to Tatsu in public, while he's only able to dominate Noa in private. Thank heavens he has a massive organ, so her shit-talking is wrong. Phew! Otherwise, he might actually just be a small-dicked loser like she says. Thank heavens he is not. That's a relief.

The art here is charmingly rough, especially in early pages, when the characters are introduced. Since their looks, beyond their generous genitalia, are not significant, little effort is put into them. Instead, we are treated to a Noa bursting out of her clothes, and a Tatsu who is otherwise a featureless teen boy-shaped image who can produce an uncomfortably enormous penis, that is otherwise never visible. He's huge, but this is not an embarrassment for him. Despite the fact that he's hard, when Noa pulls his penis out, he's not walking around with a visible hard-on. For her part, Noa is always wet and juicy, ready for sex with no foreplay—which really seems to be a commonality in these comics. No one wants to enjoy each other's bodies, they just devour them. That's quite interesting and probably would make ad interesting paper if a person was so inclined.

But I digress. This 18+ comic about two childhood friends who loathe and desire one another was interesting enough.
