I'm no longer surprised when the entirety of a light novel consists of someone's most indulgent self-insert fantasy. But while I was reading They Don't Know I'm Too Young for the Adventurers' Guild, the question that lingered in my head was, “Who is this fantasy even for?” The story of a 9-year-old who spends the entirety of the book collecting herbs for the adventurer's guild, this book felt too unambitious and low-stakes to even be called cozy fantasy. There surely must be those among us who, after a long day of being a modern human, think, “Now it's time to unwind with my book about being a child collecting herbs,” but I expect those people are few and far between.
After narrowly escaping being sold into slavery because his captor didn't realize he was able to read, Kiri is marooned in an unfamiliar town with nothing but the clothes on his back. What's a nine-year-old to do? Join the Adventurer's Guild, of course! Though it is never confirmed and nobody bats an eye, Kiri believes you have to be twelve years old to join the guild, so he lies on the signup form. That's where the title comes from, but believe me when I say nobody cares, and it's not a plot point at all. Kiri spends each day collecting herbs for just enough coin to afford some bread and water and a bed down in a stable next to a horse. He also gets to know the Adventurers Guild regulars: an unlucky-in-love fighter, a sleepy mage, a halfling with a hoarding problem, and Old Badger, a septuagenarian who has spent his entire adventuring career gathering herbs. Kiri becomes Old Badger's successor, but when something goes wrong on a herb hunt, he needs to depend on some guild regulars to help him take revenge.
I was surprised to learn that They Don't Know I'm Too Young for the Adventurers' Guild became a published novel after this serialized web story won an award, because it seems far too inconsequential to attract a broad audience. Nobody cares about Kiri's age, and it's not like you need to be a certain age to gather herbs. The way Kiri's ability to read is treated like a superpower felt like a way of buttering up the reader for an unremarkable skill. At least it's not a reincarnation isekai, and at least Kiri isn't secretly the strongest 9-year-old ever, but you know I've run out of things to praise when I'm simply listing the ways this book could have been worse.
