Manga and anime fans were met with the tragic news on October 27 of Tetsuya Chiba's death. The manga creator had several visits to the hospital since 2021. The trips included a visit to the hospital in November 2021, undergoing heart surgery to put a stint in his coronary artery in January 2022, and eye surgery in 2024. Despite it all, he continued to work at the Japan Cartoonists Association he once headed and to mentor younger artists. Creators and fans alike have come together to pay their final respects to the legendary manga creator.

Jun Adachi (Ningen Uwasa Happyaku)

I won't forget about 10 years ago during a lecture at a university (the video was shown at Comitia) Tetsuya Chiba-sensei said, “Udon is the symbol of a loser. That's why Mammoth Nishi eats udon. Because he lost.” As a sanuki udon manga creator from Kagawa Prefecture, I never got to ask him why udon was the symbol of a loser before he passed. May he rest in peace.

Kia Asamiya (Silent Möbius)

The news of the passing of Tetsuya Chiba-sensei, a veteran manga creator.
I am not only I saddened but am also reminded of the legacy he left the world.
I have read and watched Ashita no Joe since I was a child and it moves me and reflect every time.
Although we never had the chance to work together, I will always have my respect.
Chiba-sensei, thank you.
Thank you for your hard work.
I offer my deepest condolences.

Akira Himekawa (The Legend of Zelda manga series)

Tetsuo Chiba-sensei, Thank you for everything… You gave me so many things words cannot express. You supported the manga industry, but above all you stood with manga creators; and when we met your smile would comfort me and give me courage.
The other day after celebrating [Shigeru] Miyamoto being awarded the Order of Culture Award, I also posted about Chiba-sensei, and in that moment an envelope I previously received from Chiba-sensei caught my eye in my studio's archives.
When I pulled the contents of the envelope it was an autographed sketch of a famous scene from Ashita no Joe, and it was so wonderful I thought I'd post about it when…
Suddenly…I felt uneasy and thought “why am I preparing this now,, and didn't post it.
That post is as follows.
“This is an autographed sketch of a famous scene from Ashita no Joe I received two years ago from Tetsuya Chiba-sensei at an event in Utsunomiya, while he was still teaching at the Bunsei University of Art and when he received the Order of Culture Award. It's a treasure✨
I was always moved by how he treated every manga creator with care and sincerity.
Around 2010, he took an interest in our overseas manga activities and listened intently to what we said. This was when we had to deal with matters individually and he was a tremendous help when he offered sincere advice on matters of copyright.”
Looking back… He passed on the 22…
This happened the following day.
I have so many thoughts…I can't express them in a single phrase.
Thank you for everything.
Thank you for your hard work. Please rest in peace.
I will continue loving and drawing manga.
Please watch over the future of manga.

Kunihiko Ikuhara (Sailor Moon R: The Movie director)

Upon hearing the news of Tetsuya Chiba-sensei's passing I am shocked and cannot believe it.
Chiba-sensei was a dear friend of Matsumoto.
He treated me kindly since I was a child, and even now, as an adult, whenever he would visit me at home or when we'd meet he would greet me with a kind voice, saying “Maki-chan.”
Chiba-sensei, I think Matsumoto is waiting for you with a proper and delicious bowl of ramen.
And please enjoy a steak so thick you can't tell if it's lying flat or on its side.
May you rest in peace.
Thank you for everything.
Leijisha Makiko Matsumoto

Yuki Suetsugu (Chihayafuru)

The news of Tetsuya Chiba's passing.
I face met so many times comes to mind. He was gentle, soft-spoken, person who kindly listened to others and supported all sorts of positive initiatives related to manga. When he was around the atmosphere would calm down, which I thought was strange in my excitement. I thought he was special, but he would look to the horizon and say, “Don't worry about that and make good magan.” I believe his earnestness is what excited me.
I'll make sure to not forget him.
Tetsuya Chiba-sensei, may you rest in peace

Tetsuya Chiba has passed away. The wheels of time have turned. How sad. When I was assigned to run a class on writing scripts for manga for The Television and Radio Writers' Association of Japan and asked him to be an instructor he said, “Oh, if that kind of course is being offered I'll sign up as a student,” [to which I replied]“Gah, Pease don't!” He left the impression of a witty, sophisticated adult. May he rest in peace.

Yū Yoshiyama (Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube character designer)
