Steins;Gate and Beyond: The Complete Science Adventure Series Anime Timeline

by Richard Eisenbeis,

Steins;Gate is one of the big names in 2010s anime. It's had sequels, midquels, movies, and special episodes. But that's only one small part of the story. Steins;Gate itself is just one piece of something greater: the Science Adventure Series.

Connected in name only by questionable semicolon use, the Science Adventure Series spans decades. Each entry follows a different group of oddballs who come together to thwart The Committee of 300's latest attempt at world domination through scientific means. As for when these anime take place in their shared fictional world, that can get confusing—especially once time travel is brought into the equation.

In the timeline above, I've included all Science Adventure Series anime to date and even separated them by attractor field. When possible, I used dates from the anime themselves. When they weren't, I used the dates from the respective games these anime were based on. For those that still fell through the cracks, I used context clues to decide their date placement (and even worldline).

For example, in the case of glorified IBM commercial, Steins;Gate: The Sagacious Wisdom of Cognitive Computing, it is placed where it is because 1) the Phonewave is on the desk (rather than under it as it would be in the beta attractor field during most of the time Mayuri is alive), 2) Suzuha is not present beyond a Reading Steiner flashback of her and Nae, and 3) Kurisu's hotel room is the same one seen in Steins;Gate – The Movie – Load Region of Déjà Vu—implying it's the same trip but after the chaos of the film.

Admittedly, the shakiest part of this timeline is including Occultic;Nine. When this anime was made, it was technically part of a different series, the Science Visual Novel series, along with the then-yet-to-be-released game, Anonymous;Code. The idea was that, within the Science Visual Novel series, the Science Adventure Series was supposed to exist as a set of fictional works, just as in our world. However, only a few years later, the Science Visual Novel series concept was abandoned and Occultic;Nine has since been officially retconned to be part of the Science Adventure Series itself (and later game entries in the series have made references to both Steins;Gate and Occultic;Nine being equally real). All this is to say that, despite original intentions, Occultic;Nine now likely takes place on the Steins;Gate Worldline—which makes a couple of conversations that Shun Moritsuka has in it have some major implications.

Lastly, this timeline will be regularly updated whenever a new anime in the franchise is released. (Here's hoping both Robotic;Notes DaSH and Anonymous;Code get anime adaptations at some point). Any such updates will be listed below.
