A Young Maiden's Growing Pains: I Reincarnated and All I Got Was This 100X Stat Buff!

What's It About?

Saving a cat-shaped plastic bag from certain death was not how Saki Osanai thought she'd go out. At least she's got a wish out of it, and this time around, she won't spend her life being looked down on—literally or figuratively. She'll take a body that could knock any man off his feet. The gods are happy to oblige. Reborn as petite as ever, Saki—now called Satie—quickly learns her power lies not in the toweringly tall beauty she longed to have but instead in a stat buff that can take any enemy out. Worst of all, the god of the underworld warns she's under a curse of eternal youth, one she'll never be free of so long as she continues to repeat the mistakes of her past life. If she wants to break the curse keeping her down (and short), she'll need to put herself out there in a way she never dared try before. With a trusty hellhound to spoil, true love to find, and empires to conquer, this young maiden won't let anyone stand in her way!

Rating:

Let this book be a lesson to you: always be sure to ask for exactly what you want in the clearest of terms. Otherwise you'll end up like Satie. Not that she doesn't make what she ends up with work for her, but still. The poor woman died rescuing what she thought was a cat but turned out to be a plastic bag, which made the gods laugh so hard that they decided to give her a reincarnation bonus gift. (Those aren't the norm, you know, despite what isekai has been telling you.) In her first life, Satie was neglected by her parents, which led to her growing up malnourished. Her body never grew properly, so this time she wants the strength, stamina, and gorgeous curves she missed out on before. Unfortunately for her, she phrases it as wanting to be able to bowl a man over…and the gods take that literally. So Satie's new body stops maturing at age seven but she has insane strength and power. She can, in fact, knock over any man she wants, to say nothing of castle walls and other structures.

This is, as you might have guessed, a very self-aware book. In some ways that really helps – Yozakura is clearly well-versed in isekai novels and isn't afraid to let us know. Saving a cat is a tried-and-true way to meet Truck-kun, and that Satie didn't need to carries shades of Konosuba. Satie's ludicrously powerful child body also pokes a bit of fun at all of those books about preternaturally mature children adults slaver over; Satie actively resents looking seven when she's fifteen and none of the adult men in the story want to touch her or marry her, because she looks like an actual child. This is particularly frustrating for Satie, because the only way to rectify the situation is for her to find true love…although that's coming from Hades, one of the gods in question, so maybe she should take that with a grain of salt.

Breezily written, this is remarkably easy to read. It's fun if you're also well-versed in isekai stories, but it doesn't quite go far enough to make itself stand out from the herd. Despite its charming elements, it still basically reads like every other similar story in terms of plot progression, and the basic characters Satie meets, so despite its metafictional aspects, it's not really out to break any molds. Still, if you want a light read that's just plain fun and nothing more, this should fit the bill.
