Genius in the Library: This Bookish Rookie Will Save the Day!

What's It About?

Meet Martina, a brilliant young girl with one all-consuming obsession: books. She's already devoured every last volume in the commoners' library, and the last place left with unread material is the royal library inside the palace itself. There's just one tiny problem...only civil servants are allowed inside. Naturally, she does the only logical thing: aces the civil service exam and lands herself a job at the palace! But Martina's dream of open access to books galore won't come so easily. An unusual surge of monster attacks is threatening the kingdom, and the General Affairs Office where civil servants work stands at the epicenter of the resultant chaos. Loving the written word won't be enough—this rookie will have to use her book smarts to travel the world and defeat powerful enemies if she wants a quiet life of reading. With a photographic memory and a brain like no other, Martina might just be the key to saving them all.

Genius in the Library: This Bookish Rookie Will Save the Day! has a story by Misa Aoi and art by Yoh Hihara. English translation is done by Dawson Chen. Published by J-Novel Club (October 14, 2026).

Is It Worth Reading?

Rating:

A magical mystery fantasy starring a girl who loves books to a obsessive extent is just the thing I would have wished for, if you had asked. Not a villaness at all, Martina is a very competent commoner who has not only photographic memory, but the ability to apply her knowledge almost immediately in ways that make sense.

Martina comes to the civil service after having passed the test with full marks. Immediately there is some prejudice from nobles and I did fear that that would be the plot here, but thankfully it was merely a little discoloration on the bright shine of the story.

Martina and her new peers will find themselves taking on an ancient horror and the monsters it spawns, which cast the whole world into danger. With her ability to recall details perfectly, Martina becomes the center point of information for her colleagues at the General Affairs Office. From there, her skills cast a wider and wider net, until she is working alongside nobility and royalty to save their kingdom.

I was taken in by the fact that while Martina is a commoner and well out of her depth many times in this story, she is never less than completely confident in her abilities, all while being a decent person. This combination makes her beloved among her allies and even convinces potential enemies to side with her. Martina gets sucked deeper and deeper into the political situation of her world, but manages to come up with a plan offers hope.

I quite enjoyed the anachronisms chosen by translator Dawson Chen. This is purest fantasy so why not? There is no historical canon that needs to be adhered to here. Genius in the Library: This Bookish Rookie Will Save the Day! is a first of a series, and I could be tempted to read the next. After all, I am also a bibliomaniac, making a living off my obsessive need to read, alongside great people, just like Martina.
