Manga in English Supported by Gou Tanabe Live on Kickstarter
PARIS, FRANCE - June 3 2024 - Indie publishing company Happy Misfits Publishing is proud to announce its first Kickstarter campaign has now launched. Liminalis is a 2OO-page deep and trippy manga one-shot about the dream landscape and the human subconscious.
Alone in a deserted village blanketed with snow, a young boy dreams of travel and adventure. He would probably have taken the leap if he weren't increasingly affected by a mysterious ailment. However, a friendly ghostly creature helps him keep hope alive as he is overwhelmed by a recurring ominous nightmare. In this nightmare, a vision becomes increasingly clear: an island shrouded in mist, drawing ever closer.
At the heart of this tale is a 19th-century painting: Isle of the Dead by Arnold Böcklin. This eerie and oppressive piece of art has fascinated and inspired many artists since its creation. Martin Scorsese, Philippe Druillet, Salvador Dali, H.R. Giger... This painting has continued to obsess painters, filmmakers, musicians, and comic book artists for decades.
Liminalis is French artist Neal Pouyer's homage to this painting. In this dreamlike tale, the island is as much a character in the story as the child and his protector.
But Liminalis doesn't draw its inspiration solely from 19th-century symbolism. From the desolate and mysterious world of Shadow of the Colossus, to the psychological horror of Silent Hill, and the dark, silent storytelling of Blame!, this psychedelic adventure is a tribute to popular culture over the past 30 years.
Written and drawn by Neal Pouyer (@_Neald on X), who is also a nuclear engineer by day, Liminalis has been brewing in Neal's mind for some years before becoming the classic in the making this tale now is.
Live on Kickstarter since May 29, Liminalis has already reached 50% of its initial goal, received the “Project We Love” badge from the Kickstarter team and is supported by Gou Tanabe. Famous for his adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft's work in manga format, Mr Tanabe spent time with Neal Pouyer to literally dive into Liminalis' universe and craft a gorgeous piece of art which is now the Kickstarter exclusive cover of the book.
