Anime's Impact to be Explored in Icons of Anime, an Immersive New Documentary from CREATORVC
THE JOURNEY BEGINS WITH FAN INVITATION TO HELP SHAPE DOCUMENTARY FORMAT
Los Angeles, CA - June 25, 2026: CREATORVC, the creators of the critically acclaimed documentaries Aliens Expanded, The Thing Expanded, and the five-part In Search of Darkness series, invites fans to share their passion for anime by helping to shape the format of the upcoming documentary, Icons of Anime: The Western Awakening.
Speed Racer. Star Blazers. Robotech. Akira. Ghost in the Shell. Each of those titles hit the West like a tsunami. Anime dazzles the eye with stunning visuals, grips the heart with emotional authenticity, and challenges the mind with unparalleled diversity. Those who discover anime become united in their passion for this engaging world of entertainment.
In just two generations, anime went from underground entertainment to global phenomenon. How did cultural and economic trends shape the art form? Why did certain titles have an impact? What did anime bring to America that we didn't already have? Icons of Anime will seek to answer these questions and many more in the way CREATORVC does best: a multi-hour deep dive that covers every angle of its subject, steered by animation director and veteran anime fan Tim Eldred.
Take the Icons of Anime Survey:
Anime fans are encouraged to share their thoughts in a survey after reading the Icons of Anime synopsis — giving the audience as much say as possible in the collaborative process.
Known for prioritizing fan-inclusive participation in their documentary projects, CREATORVC's goal is to gather fan insights, questions, and preferences to enhance the upcoming documentary experience and allow every anime fan a unique opportunity to feel seen and heard.
The Icons of Anime survey can be found at iconsofanimedoc.com. Participation ends August 7, 2026.
From Writer/Director Tim Eldred:
"Ever since Speed Racer first tore across my TV screen, I knew life would never be the same. As anime first found its way into my mind and heart in the '70s and '80s, it inspired me like nothing else before it. Watching it made me want to make comics and cartoons for a living, so that I could become part of that international tide of creativity, and that's exactly what I went on to do. Making Icons of Anime will be one way to repay that gift, and extend the same opportunity to other fans. The voices of our generation are starting to go quiet, and this feels like the best chance to get our story on the record while enough of us are still around to tell it. I'm immensely grateful to CREATORVC for recognizing how important this is to all of us."
From Executive Producer David Weiner:
"I'm thrilled to be working with the talented Tim Eldred at the helm of Icons of Anime, bringing an exciting, brand-new angle about the art form to anime fans, by way of our next longform CREATORVC documentary. As a '70s kid growing up glued to the TV in New York, my first anime exposure was watching Brave Raideen on UHF channel 47, introduced by my Japanese school friends. I quickly noticed a radically different, wonderful style of animation that told me that I was experiencing something special. Gigantor, Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, and Star Blazers cemented my love for anime. And once I saw Akira on VHS, all bets were off. Can't wait to dive in!"
From Producer Daniel Richardson:
"It was an afternoon as a child watching Cartoon Network that introduced me to the world of anime, and it's fair to say, it was an introduction that fundamentally changed my understanding of what animation could be. As I witnessed for the first time the world of Dragon Ball Z, even as a child I knew that I was seeing something special, something different, something unlike all the other animation I grew up on. As I grew older I would seek out more like this and discover a whole industry creating stories and worlds with a level of craft like no other. I fell in love with the twisty tales of Death Note, Baccano! and Perfect Blue. I'd go back in time and discover classics that became new favorites in Akira, Castle in the Sky, and Angel's Egg. And I never stopped watching, continuing to find joy in the likes of DAN DA DAN, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Frieren. Anime is the kind of artistic medium that cultivates lifelong fandom, that inspires such passion in its audience, many thousands have learned an entire second language just to engage with it further. To chronicle its rise and celebrate the work of the artists who create in this space with David and Tim is a true honor."
