One day, Minho's world collapses, starting with his high school. When grotesque creatures descend upon Songcheon, the citizens are left helpless against their overwhelming violence and power. Worse still, the government abandons the city entirely, declaring that Songcheon must be sacrificed to protect the rest of humanity. With no rescue coming and danger closing in from every direction, Minho and his friends are forced to fight for survival in an apocalyptic city where the deadly creatures aren't the only thing they can't trust. This series contains graphic depictions of bullying, including intense horror and distressing imagery. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.

Minho's life is no picnic. His family has very little, and had banked it all on him pursuing judo. But when a rich kid buys his way to being school rep, Minho is ready to pack it in. When he gets a second chance, Minho's life takes a turn for the horrific. A mysterious and vile creature rips the bully to pieces in front of him, then begins to attack the whole school.

In between the eldritch horrors, the blood and gore, we're also introduced to a few extra mysteries. What are the creatures? Why are the students being sacrificed? Who are the demons, and why has the government abandoned them? And beyond this…why does Minho keep being ignored by the creatures?

This is some really excellent horror. Betrayed by government and school officials, Minho is a teenage everyman, fighting against the demonic powers that be, the leviathan of government corruption and disinterest, to find the truth and survive.

This may be obvious, but the art here is…bloody. Grotesque creatures are truly grotesque, with several classic horror tropes – bodies made of faces, tentacles, gaping mouths, ever-shifting forms. It's all good stuff.

Characters are minimal, beyond Minho. He's got a sidekick friend, whose death will surely be shocking in a future chapter, and a bunch of monster fodder students with him as he heads into a “shelter” that is already infested with diabolical horrors.

Sure, the pacing here is mostly a lot of jump scares, but that's the nature of a monster attack story. Still, it kept me reading through the four chapters that are on Webtoons.

Hell City is a good horror comic. If you like blood and guts, you'll like it.
