Ghost in the Shell × GARRACK: A Made-in-Japan Mechanical Watch Inspired by Fuchikoma, with a Raden Mother-of-Pearl Dial, Available from 31 July 2026

A hand-finished automatic timepiece whose dial is crafted in raden, the traditional Japanese art of mother-of-pearl inlay — no two pieces alike.

Tokyo, Japan — 14 July 2026 — Ueni Trading Co., Ltd. announces that its character-collaboration brand GARRACK will launch a Made-in-Japan mechanical watch created in collaboration with Ghost in the Shell. The Fuchikoma Model will be available for pre-order from 17 July 2026, with general availability beginning on 31 July 2026. The dial is finished entirely by hand using raden — a traditional Japanese craft of mother-of-pearl inlay — making every watch a one-of-a-kind piece.

Product Overview

The Fuchikoma Model renders the Fuchikoma on the dial, viewed from the front, in traditional raden mother-of-pearl inlay. In Ghost in the Shell, the Fuchikoma are the AI think tanks used by the unit — they can be piloted by squad members or operate autonomously, and are equipped with thermal-optical camouflage and wire launchers. Design cues from the character are carried across the watch: its wheels inspire the hour markers, and its arms inform the shape of the hands. The choice of raden draws on the “Shell” of the title and its theme of the prosthetic body: just as the story explores the vessel that houses the ghost, the watch clothes its mechanism in the luminous nacre of natural seashell.

Featuring Traditional Japanese Craftsmanship: Raden (Mother-of-Pearl Inlay)

Raden is a traditional Japanese technique in which the iridescent nacre of seashells such as abalone is shaved to roughly 0.1 mm and inlaid into a lacquer ground. In Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, where the black lacquer allows thin shell to glow blue when seen through it, the technique has long been known as aogai-nuri and stands among the signature methods of Takaoka lacquerware, a nationally designated traditional craft.

Each dial was produced by Takeshi Musashigawa, fourth-generation artisan of Musashigawa Studio (established 1910), a workshop that has carried the tradition of Takaoka lacquerware across generations. Working with fine, individually cut pieces of shell, Musashigawa translated the intricate design of the Fuchikoma onto the dial — one of the most technically demanding works in his portfolio. Because the nacre is a natural material and every piece is applied by hand, color and pattern vary from one dial to the next, and the surface shifts in appearance with the angle of the light.
