A former star voice actress enters a real isekai game to win back the future she lost!

Ayano, a former star voice actress, accepts the goddess's offer in hopes of shining once again as a voice actress. Reborn as a High Elf, one of the world's strongest races, she sets out on a quest to "clear" the game-like fantasy world using her player knowledge, joined by an irresistibly cute beast-eared heroine. But what awaits them beyond the game's scenario...!?

I must give credit where it's due: This Elf Will Not Be Shelved! doesn't inundate us with the usual reincarnation manga schtick. Yes, our heroine Ayano has, in fact, been reborn as an infant in a video game world. Yes, she was sent there by a mysterious goddess who made bigger promises than she could deliver on. But we gather that information as these first four chapters unfold. There's no massive infodump, no conversation with a god in a blank space as the rules are gone over, and, as it turns out, Ayano may not even be dead. All we know about her former life is that she was (is?) a voice actor whose career suffered some sort of scandal, and now she's in this game world as an elf trying to fulfill the goddess' nebulous wishes to get her own wish granted. That's impressively not terrible for Game Isekai Number 4,097.

That said, this really feels like an adaptation of a light novel that's not going as smoothly as it might. Ayano's adventures, by necessity, skip over a lot (she does start with being born and then dumped for having the wrong hair color), but it feels very disjointed. There's also a weird disconnect with Ayano saying that she'll turn into a “little girl” when she hits a certain level, but when it happens, she looks like a teenager, which is not, by my definition, any such thing. She also immediately faces the threat of sexual assault and sexual slavery as soon as she ages up, which, while par for the isekai course, is still remarkably distasteful. Simply put, this is a manga that could use a coat of polish.

Ayano's determination and the occasional effective gag do make up for a lot, though. It may not be clear how Ayano ended up in this game she played a lot back in Japan, but she's very good at using her previous information to progress, and she is not taking any nonsense from anyone. The art is fun, particularly on the monster front, and it mostly feels like its own thing rather than a regurgitation of other similar series. I don't know that this will appeal to you if you're sick of the genre, but if you still enjoy it, This Elf Will Not Be Shelved! is decently entertaining.

With an interesting balance of goofy fun and unpleasant vulgarity, This Elf Will Not Be Shelved! Volume 1 finished up with me saying “Interesting…” out loud. The premise is sort of typical – a trauma in our world leads to Ayano being reincarnated in the world of the game in which she has hidden from the trauma of her life. In this setup, Ayano chooses to be incarnated in the game and is uniquely positioned as a skilled player with special abilities.

But you know how it is, you really have to read the fine print. I read Chapter 0 last, for reasons. I think that worked to give the prologue some genuine weight.

The Goddess who asked heroes to incarnate into the game world offered prizes, but didn't mention that she wasn't giving Ayano a strong foundation. Born as a High Elf, baby Ayano is—quite literally—cast out of their society. Using her game knowledge and abilities, she powers up quickly, but finds that human society is pretty brutal for non-humans. So, yay, CW for threatened and attempted rape. Whee.

This story moves quickly, though, as Ayano uses that top player knowledge and powers up very quickly…and soon, Ayano is joined by her dream party partner, Fox Girl Homura. The two of them quickly became a partnership and a relationship. And then the story turns a bit dark.

Ayano and Homura will face more difficulties as the story progresses, but as the title suggests, Ayano has no intention of failing. There are a few handwaves as some of the holes in the plot seem rather obvious, such as why does Homura know things NPCs can't know…? Hm, what could that possibly be?

I won't say it's light-hearted; it's actually a little grim, but it was a fun, fast-paced Isekai fantasy.
