Everyone loves a “team of misfits fight above their level” story, and between you and me, I was really in the mood for an isekai just like this book. I wanted to watch a reborn dude with knowledge of the game world reconfigure the powers he's given and allow him to do stuff he shouldn't be able to do, just for the thrill of the “how.” Then I wanted to watch him team up with other misfits and do the same thing for them. If a story gave me all that, I would have been fully prepared to give it a 4-star rating.

But The Exiled Heavy Knight Knows How to Game the System, Volume 1-2 exceeded my expectations. Elymas is a good person, and he can read the room, a skill that manga protagonists rarely have. As a result, we don't have to deal with creepy laughter or low self-esteem from Elymas, just good manners and an unerring drive to accomplish specific goals. Here we're seeing Elymas taking his first steps toward building a team by adding a partner with unusual skills—certainly not ones I've seen before in an isekai —and then working on her confidence to support his goals.

The art is satisfactory, and thus far, the male and female characters both seem to be allowed full sets of clothing…a touch that added one more piece of that final star. This manga scratched all my itches…and I wished there were more, just because I was getting all the dopamine hits I could want from it. As an isekai adventure that, at least thus far, is all-ages, I thought this was a great read.
